India has revised timelines under the PM Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement (PM E-DRIVE) scheme to accelerate adoption of electric two-wheelers and three-wheelers, offering clearer guidance for consumers and manufacturers while aiming for efficient use of the programme’s ₹10,900 crore allocation.
Extended subsidy timelines
Subsidies for electric two-wheelers (e2W) will now be available until July 31, 2026, while incentives for electric three-wheelers (e3W)—including e-rickshaws and cargo variants—will continue until March 31, 2028. The extensions are intended to support demand, especially in price-sensitive markets and smaller towns where upfront affordability remains a key barrier to EV adoption.
First-come, first-served disbursal
The scheme’s funds will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. With a total outlay of ₹10,900 crore, subsidies could be exhausted before the stated deadlines if uptake is rapid. The mechanism is designed to encourage timely purchases and to ensure fiscal discipline in subsidy disbursement.
Eligibility criteria and price caps
To focus benefits on mass-market vehicles, the government has retained price caps: electric two-wheelers priced up to ₹1.5 lakh and electric three-wheelers priced up to ₹2.5 lakh qualify for incentives. Subsidy amounts will also be linked to battery capacity, aligning support with vehicle performance and promoting better value for public funds.
Industry and consumer implications
The revised timelines are likely to provide a near-term boost to EV sales by lowering effective purchase costs for eligible buyers. For manufacturers and retailers, clearer deadlines and funding rules offer a more predictable planning horizon for production, pricing and distribution strategies.
At the same time, the calibrated approach signals a gradual policy shift toward reducing reliance on subsidies as economies of scale, technology improvements and local manufacturing increase. The updated PM E-DRIVE framework thus aims to balance short-term stimulus for adoption with longer-term sustainability of India’s electric mobility transition.
