BluJ Aerospace, a Hyderabad startup, is building a VTOL (vertical take-off and landing) cargo aircraft to help Indian defence and logistics reach remote, high-altitude areas quickly and reliably. The company aims to cut transit time where roads and runways are absent, improving supply lines for troops and relief operations.
Practical design focused on defence needs
Founded in 2022 by aerospace engineers Maruthi Amardeep Sri Vatsavaya and Utham Kumar Dharmapuri, BluJ Aerospace has prioritised a cargo-first strategy over passenger or air-taxi markets. This gives the project immediate utility for military supply missions, disaster response, and remote medical logistics.
Capabilities and performance
The aircraft is being developed to carry about 100 kg of payload over 250–300 km. Its VTOL capability eliminates the need for runways, enabling direct access to forward posts and isolated settlements. This addresses a persistent logistics bottleneck along India’s mountainous borders.
Hybrid propulsion for range and efficiency
BluJ’s design combines multiple rotors for vertical lift with conventional forward propulsion for efficient cruise. This hybrid architecture balances the hovering ability of helicopters with the range and speed of fixed-wing aircraft, improving energy use and operational flexibility.
Roadmap to cleaner power
Current prototypes use battery power, but the company plans a transition to hydrogen-electric propulsion. Hydrogen fuel cells could extend range, increase payload capability and cut emissions, aligning the project with India’s emphasis on sustainable aviation technologies.
Testing and deployment timeline
The startup has conducted prototype tests in Hyderabad that demonstrated vertical take-off, stable flight and landing. These trials indicate the concept is maturing from lab validation to operational demonstrations.
BluJ Aerospace aims to commercialise its cargo VTOL platform in the coming years, with an initial focus on defence and emergency logistics customers.
